Seven Layers of Heaven

 By RILEY MULLAN

Seven layer bars, also known as magic bars are a sweet dessert enjoyed in households all over the United States and have been homegrown in families for generations. The ingredients in these bars vary, but as long as there are seven it falls into the seven layer bar dessert category.

One of the most popular variations of the bar includes butter, graham cracker crumbs, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, walnuts, condensed milk and coconut.

The credit to these magic bars can be given to Gail Borden, who was the first to market condensed milk in the US and worked for Eagle Brand milk company. Borden created and sold his own form of the cookie bar from his street cart in NYC in 1856.

As the popularity of condensed milk grew, so did the seven layer bars. In the 1960s Borden’s recipe was marketed as “Magic Cookie Bars” and put on the back of the Eagle brand condensed milk packaging for families to use all over the US.

Today seven layer bars can be found in coffee shops, pastry shops, and almost any bake sale because you get a delicious outcome for such a quick and easy recipe.
